President:  Josh Unger

Josh is an avid climber with experience all over the Southeast, Idaho, and Utah, splitting his time between mountaineering and sport climbing.  He has also been a commercial raft guide on the Payette River and has been a competent class IV kayaker.  Josh holds a degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida, and currently lives, works, and plays in Boise, ID.

Josh and Sean are currently working to design online software for teachers to use to make homework and other assignments more efficient. 




Vice President:  Katie Basham

Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, Katie has been exploring the outdoors since she was a young girl.  Katie currently lives in Bozeman, Montana, and is applying to graduate school.  She enjoys kayaking and hiking, and has done extensive traveling in New Zealand.  This year, she will embark on a journey around South America and continue to help with a lacrosse league she founded in Bozeman.  Katie has always been dedicated to helping worthy causes, previously raising money for the Leukemia Society of America.





Secretary:  Dr. Kim Tanabe 

Dr. Kim Tanabe is currently employed as a physician in Boise, ID, but has taught kayaking in Idaho, and Chile.  She has previously worked with other outdoor-based non-profit organizations.  She was also team-mom for a group of junior kayak slalom athletes, sharing responsibility for the orchestration of two trips to Chile.  Both of her two daughters are excellent kayakers.  For the Alzar School, Kim has reviewed medical protocol and will be a co-leader on future trips.






Treasurer:  Tony Pori

Tony Pori is the owner of the Math Advantage, a tutoring firm in Boise, Idaho.  He is dedicated to helping students overcome struggles in school, and volunteers his time at local high schools to help with advanced mathematics.  In the past, he has coordinated home-schooling for families and helped students prepare for the SAT and ACT tests.  Tony enjoys hiking and climbing, and has a beautiful, well-trained golden retriever.







Executive Director: Kristin Bierle

One of the founders of the Alzar School, Kristin Bierle was born and raised in North Carolina. She started exploring the outdoors by crawling through caves and paddling rivers with her dad, then moved on to fine-tune her skills at Camp Green Cove.  Later, she came to Idaho for her summers to teach kayaking on the Payette River.  She has worked for seven years in Idaho, but has also taught in California, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, and North Carolina.  Kristin graduated with honors from Boise State University in May 2006 with an interdisciplinary degree in Education, Economics, and Spanish.  She is currently certified as a Wilderness First Responder, Swiftwater Rescue (Levels 1 & 2) by Rescue 3 International, ACA Whitewater Kayak Instructor, Lifeguard, and CPR.  See Kristin’s resume.


Head Teacher: Sean Bierle

Sean Bierle has lived all over the U.S. and loves to travel. He has been working in the whitewater industry for the past eight years, starting in Idaho.  He has guided rafts, taught kayaking, and conducted river rescue clinics around the U.S., Costa Rica, and Chile.  He spent two seasons in Costa Rica leading week-long trips and currently teaches science and math at Boise High School.  Additionally, Sean has worked as a  rock climbing instructor, adjunct professor for Boise State University, lifeguard, substitute teacher, and private tutor.   Sean graduated from the University of Florida with honors in December of 2002, and finished his Masters in Education at Boise State University in August 2006.  Currently Sean holds certifications as a W-EMT, Swiftwater Rescue Technician (Levels 1 & 2) by Rescue 3 International, ACA Whitewater Kayak Instructor, and CPR.   See Sean’s resume.
