Where will you go? What will you learn?
During the Alzar Year, you will first come to our base campus in Idaho for an eight week block, where you'll meet the 14-19 other students and 6 teachers. This first session will include a backpacking trip, orientation, and the introduction to your courses for the year. You'll learn about our school culture and begin tackling our leadership curriculum, the "10 Elements of Leadership." The Alzar School is a rigorous college preparatory program, so you can expect to take classes in all disciplines, including Advanced Placement (AP) and dual enrollment courses. On top of these more traditional academic classes, you'll learn basic outdoor skills, practicing hiking, climbing, paddling, and more.
You'll return home for a fall break, during which you'll work independently to study background information for your classes and our first international expedition of the year. We'll all travel together to that location (someplace like Costa Rica, Mexico, New Zealand...). On this first introductory expedition, you'll learn how to pack efficienty and how to travel in a group. We'll explore our international location for approximately four weeks, before you return home for winter vacation.
After the break, we'll all reunite at the Alzar base campus in Idaho for a short winter session. This is when you'll learn useful winter camping techniques, as well as ski, snowboard, snowshoe, etc. Then, we'll all head together to Chile, for the year's major international expedition. We'll be in Chile for over eight weeks, exploring all the majestic country has to offer. You'll be immersed in its rich culture, with the opportunity to authentically practice your Spanish skills.
After Chile, you'll return home for a short spring break. The last portion of the academic year will be spent back in Idaho at our base campus, where you'll put your leadership skills in action. You'll engage in a large scale service project that will integrate the techniques you've learned throughout the year.
